GRUMETI RIVER CAMP
Set in a remote valley in the western corridor of the Serengeti just
50km east of Lake Victoria, Grumeti is a blissful little camp that's
nestled beneath some towering riverine trees, on a oxbow of the main
river. It's a wild camp at certain times of year yet is always full
of charm, romance and character. The staff are pleasant, guides knowledgeable,
food excellent and the ten extravagantly decorated tents give another
meaning to 'life under canvas'.
KIRAWIRA CAMP
Kirawira is a reincarnation of an elegant Victorian era outpost, set
against the imposing backdrop of the Western Serengeti. Here, guests
experience Africa as if they are among the first to travel here. Set
upon a hill with commanding views, Kirawira's twenty five luxurious
rooms have spectacular views. The knowledgeable guides, exquisite food
and friendly atmosphere, make this a camp worth experiencing.
KLEIN'S CAMP
Klein's captures breathtaking views of an active valley, through which
pass migratory herds of wildebeest and zebra. The elephants rule this
landscape, moving in numbers unequalled anywhere else in the Serengeti.
Accommodating just twenty guests, Klein's is very private! With beautifully
furnishings, excellent food and knowledgeable guides to take guests
on walks and drives, it's an ideal little camp suited to honeymooners
or those who seek greater attention to detail.
LOBO WILDLIFE LODGE
Located in Serengeti's Lobo area, approximately 45kms from the Kenyan
border, this is one of the best lodges operated by the government, though
the seventy five rooms are simple. However, saying this, come here for
the excellent wildlife which will certainly make up for any of the lodges
discomforts. There is a beautiful lookout post near the swimming pool,
where one can view animals grazing in the plains below the lodge.
MBUZI MAWE TENTED CAMP
Set amid rocky outcrops or 'kopjes' as they are called locally, which
are geological features of the Serengeti, Mbuzi Mawe tented camp is
in the heart of the Serengeti National Park, half way between Seronera
and Lobo, in a low use area of the park.
The camp consists of 16 uniquely appointed luxury guest tents each with
their own en suite facilities and private veranda. Tents are decorated
in a true African luxury style with mosquito nets and four poster beds
and luxury his and hers bathrooms
The Serengeti derived from the Maasai word 'siringet' meaning endless
plains, and is home to 3 million large animals. Here, on the vast plains,
you can get a chance to witness the annual migration * one of natures
most breathtaking wonders.
Activities here at Mbuzi Mawe include daily
game drives where with the aid of your guide you will have the opportunity
to experience and appreciate first hand the harshness and beauty of
this area. Balloon flights and sundowner cocktails can be arranged.
MIGRATION CAMP
Overlooking the Grumeti River, where crocodile lie patiently in wait,
Grumeti Camp is the perfect place to witness the migration in action
(generally October to November and April to June). With just fourteen
spacious tents raised on wooden platforms, the views are stunning. Grumeti
is small enough to offer a personal service as well as providing knowledgeable
guides, drives and walks. All tailored to guest's requirements.
SERENGETI SERENA SAFARI LODGE
Set high on a hill with breathtaking views of sweeping grasslands and
unspoiled wilderness landscape, big game can be seen feeding in full
view of the lodge. The lodge's design is simple but stunning and inspired
from a traditional African village theme. There are sixty six rondavel
huts with luxury bedrooms that all have their own view of the vast Serengeti
plains. Rich in atmosphere and African features, the lodge captures
the heart of every visitor that stays here. It's also in a prime game
viewing area with every facility to keep one entertained for a week!
SERENGETI SOPA LODGE
The Serengeti Sopa lodge is located in the Nyarboro Hills in the south
west of the Serengeti National Park and is the only tourism development
in this section of the park. Year round water and the acacia woodland
in this area create an ideal environment for the wide variety of wildlife
seen in the immediate vicinity of the lodge. Looking out over the seemingly
endless Serengeti plains, this hill side lodge is a tranquil oasis set
in thousands of square kilometres of Serengeti National Park. The lodge
can accommodate around 170 guests in 79 suites, each enjoying wall-to-wall
carpeting, a private lounge with a mini bar, a bedroom with two queen
size beds and ample room for a third guest. Each has a private veranda
which offers stunning views over the plains. As the sun sets, you may
enjoy sundowner cocktails by the pool, and in the evening, after a 4-course
dinner, traditional dancers entertain guests. Slide presentations are
also held daily by resident naturalists.
SERONERA WILDLIFE LODGE
Ideally located in the heart of the Serengeti plains on the edge of
the Seronera River, this is the perfect starting point for exploring
the area. The lodge is built on a kopje with excellent views. There
are seventy five very simple yet comfortable rooms. Don't come here
if you're looking for excellent service and luxurious rooms, though
the staff are very friendly and rooms clean. Use the lodge for its great
location - especially during the months of the migration. There is also
a spacious restaurant and very pleasant bar, that overlooks the plains.
NDUTU SAFARI LODGE SERENGETI
Situated in the south-eastern part of the Serengeti, Ndutu is shaded
by towering acacia trees facing the lake. The thirty two cottages are
built of local materials and have private verandas to enjoy the views.
It's certainly a peaceful little camp with good game year round in the
surrounding plains, waterholes and marshes. However, the whole area
is transformed during the few months when the migration passed through!
Tarangire
TARANGIRE SOPA LODGE TARANGIRE NATIONAL
PARK
Tarangire is recognised as one of the best parks on the northern circuit
for elephant viewing during the dry season and Tarangire Sopa is ideally
placed to experience this. The lodge welcomes guests to its vast marble-floored
reception area with cold flannels and iced juice. In the pretty gardens
a large circular pool with a central island, a pool bar and elegant
wooden loungers demonstrates the lodge's commitment to comfort. Delicious
barbecue lunches are often served here. A broad veranda wraps itself
around the lodge and gives prime viewing for the waterhole below, which
is filled during the dry season and becomes a magnet to wildlife. The
rooms at the lodge are simple, comfortable and spacious and arranged
in groups of four, in African-style buildings. Large sliding doors open
to a private balcony.
Ngorongoro
NGORONGORO CRATER LODGE NGORONGORO CRATER
Perched on the rim of the crater, the lodge itself is one of Tanzania's
wonders! The design is wonderfully opulent with great attention to detail,
imaginative antiques, African art and English country house furnishings
in perfect harmony! There are thirty rooms in three separate camps here,
all slightly different, though each oozes romantic, intimately and secrecy.
It's certainly one of the most luxurious lodges in Tanzania, so not
suited to everyone.
NGORONGORO SERENA SAFARI LODGE NGORONGORO
CRATER
Built into the rim of the crater, the plant and ivy-covered native stones
are gradually blending into the surrounding hillside. (the lodge is
still quite new) The views of the crater will certainly take guests
breath away, as the seventy five rooms and bar/restaurant all look out
across the valley below. The service is friendly, food delicious and
facilities well run. There are also numerous walks and activities one
can do from the lodge.
NGORONGORO SOPA LODGE NGORONGORO CRATER
The lodge is located on Lemala Hill on the uppermost eastern rim of
the Ngorongoro Crater, making this the only tourist development on the
eastern rim of the crater. The views into the crater floor from here
are spectacular and sunsets magnificent. Another major advantage here
is that guests can enjoy a safari begins within five minutes of leaving
the lodge, as the park gate is very close. The lodge is tastefully decorated,
spacious and all the bedrooms are modern, comfortable and equipped with
everything one would expect from a hotel of this class. With an altitude
of 2,375 metres, the lodge experiences cool and even cold weather, especially
during the winter months of June and July when temperatures can get
as low as 10' C. However, guests enjoy sunshine during most of the year
and must take care when sunbathing by the pool due to the altitude.
The food and service here is stylish with meals being a massif collection
of delicious international and Tanzanian dishes.
NGORONGORO WILDLIFE LODGE NGORONGORO CRATER
The lodge is located in a spectacular position: literally perched on
the rim of the crater and built mainly from natural stone and local
timber. The 75 rooms are all simple yet comfortable, though the views
from the rooms make up for any modernisation that they lack. The staff
are friendly and the outside veranda must offer one of the best sundowner
spots in Tanzania.
Manyara
KIRURUMU TENTED CAMP MANYARA
Set high on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, Kirurumu has marvelous
view over the distant Lake Manyara, the Rift floor and Mount Losimingori.
Behind Kirurumu, the Ngorongoro highlands rise to form the gateway to
Ngorongoro region. The tented camp is extremely unobtrusive, having
been built with great sensitivity to eco-tourism. The staff here are
friendly, the lodge comfortable, food delicious and atmosphere peaceful
at all times. With just twenty tastefully furnished tents, its still
a personal lodge.
LAKE MANYARA HOTEL LAKE MANYARA
Being one of the first hotels built in the Manyara region, it commands
one of the nicest views of the lake. It is a simply furnished hotel
with around one hundred rooms, suited perfectly for those who don't
seek luxury, however want an ideal location to explore this fascinating
area. It has mature and colourful gardens, a great swimming pool and
its restaurant is supplied daily by local farm producers.
LAKE MANYARA SERENA LODGE LAKE MANYARA
It would be difficult to find a more dramatic setting than the Lake
Manyara Serena Lodge. Situated at the edge of an escarpment, this deluxe
lodge overlooks both the Great Rift Valley, which formed millions of
years ago, and the beautiful soda lake of Manyara with is lavish supply
of bird life. The birds themselves have provided the inspiration for
the lodge's architecture. Graceful, curving and free flowing, it is
built in the local circular style and exudes an atmosphere of peacefulness
where man and nature co-exist. From the patterns in the reception area
resembling bird migration paths, to the soft geometric designs in the
bedrooms, there is barely a single straight line in its design. The
bar and restaurant offer guests both indoor and outdoor seating at each
meal. Sumptuous menus, buffets and barbecues are served to guests alongside
authentic African dishes.
Arusha
NOVOTEL MOUNT MERU HOTEL ARUSHA
Nestled at the foot of Mount Meru, the hotel is approximately 45 minutes
from Kilimanjaro Airport and 10 minutes from Arusha Town. The one hundred
and ninety two roomed hotel offers a comfortable stay in enjoyable surroundings.
Facilities include a swimming pool, restaurants, coffee shop, gift shop,
conference rooms and easy access to a golf course. The location is also
good for local connections and the Nairobi shuttle bus service.
Serena Mountain Village
Wreathed in multi-coloured tresses of tumbling bougainvillea, Mountain
Village is hidden in the depths of a beautiful coffee plantation. Strung
like a necklace around the shores of an idyllic wooded lake, a haven
of calm and serenity is found here, just outside the hustle and bustle
of Arusha, Tanzania's premier 'Safari Town'. Set in the flowered gardens
of a coffee planter's farm house and surrounded by rolling groves of
wax-green coffee bushes, Mountain Village offers wide timbered decks
with panoramic views over Lake Duluti, and a selection of ethnically-styled
'Rondavel' village-cluster rooms. Each of these is neatly thatched with
'Makuti' stems, lavishly embellished with 'Makonde' carvings and comfortably
furnished in traditional safari style. It's a great location to simply
relax and enjoy strolls around the farm or gentle canoeing trips on
the lake.
Selous Reserve
BEHO BEHO CAMP THE SELOUS GAME RESERVE
Perched on a hillside deep inside the Selous, Beho Beho enjoys outstanding
views and feels completely isolated from the world around. There's a
small river gorge in front, and the shimmering lake in the distance.
The lodge is simple yet luxurious with a whole host of activities from
walks, boat trips to game drives. With just 10 bandas, it feels small
and personal and quite suited to families.
MBUYU CAMP SELOUS GAME RESERVE
Mbuyu captures an old style atmosphere, where you really feel you're
on safari. The camp doesn't concentrate on the upmarket safari frills
found in many other camps, however focuses on nature. What it lacks
in luxury is certainly made up in quality guides. Though it is quite
comfortable! Catering for a maximum of thirty guests in spacious tents,
the camp is situated around one big baobab tree on a sweeping bend of
the mighty Rufiji River. Activities include drives, walks and boating.
There are also mobile camping options.
RUFIJI RIVER CAMP SELOUS GAME RESERVE
Situated in the heart of the Selous overlooking the river, the lodge
offers twenty makuti covered tents that are all simple but very comfortable.
The food is international and extremely good, and overall, the lodge
aims to offer guests an intimate relationship with the surrounding bush.
Here, experienced guides specialise in drives in open vehicles, walking
safaris and explorations by boat along the rivers banks.
SAND RIVERS LODGE THE SELOUS GAME RESERVE
Sand Rivers stands on a rocky outcrop beside the Rufiji River, in an
isolated part of the northern sector of the reserve. The lodge was built
with flair and imagination, entirely from local materials, with spectacular
views over the magnificent Rufiji River. With just eight secluded cottages
located along the riverbank, they are comfortable and exclusive! Activities
include game drives, boat and fishing trips and walking safaris, all
accompanied by an experienced guide. There is also a pool here. The
camp is closed during the rains.
SELOUS SAFARI CAMP THE SELOUS GAME RESERVE
Located in the north-eastern sector of the reserve, the Selous Safari
Camp is highly populated with game and viewing from one's tent is often
spectacular. The twelve tents are raised on wooden platforms and look
out over Lake Nzerekera. Located for maximum privacy all tents have
generous viewing decks, where on can often simply sit and gaze. The
meals are a high light here, however game viewing is naturally the ultimate
attraction. Activities include game drives in open vehicles, fascinating
walks and interesting boat trips along the rivers banks. The camp is
closed during the heavy rains.
Kilimanjaro
MARANGU HOTEL MOUNT KILIMANJARO
Marangu Hotel still retains the charm and hospitality reminiscent of
the 1920's. It's nestled at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro and offers lovely
gardens to explore as guests prepare or relax around their climbs. Cottages
are made of stone and many have a shared living area in the centre.
The dining room is large and airy, serving hearty, home-style food.
NAKARA HOTEL MOUNT KILIMANJARO
Nakara Hotel is located on the slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro, around one
hundred kilometres from Kilimanjaro Airport. With the Marangu Gate only
2kms from the hotel, it's perfectly suited to climbers. With around
twenty five en suite rooms that are clean and tidy, guests feel quite
intimate here, though there is usually a buzz of excitement in the air!
The hotel has a bar, restaurant with a good a la carte menu and also
provided buffets for larger climbing groups.
OL TUKAI AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK
Ol Tukai lies at the heart of Amboseli, set at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro.
The eighty cottage style rooms spreads out on either side of the main
lodge, around well manicured lawns and a canopy of acacia trees. The
architecture is unobtrusive with lots of wood, slate and local stone.
The lodge is well run, very comfortable and has one of the best settings
in the park.
GIBB'S FARM KARATU
Surrounded by lush tropical flowers, towering trees and a coffee plantation,
Gibb's captures unforgettable views towards the Great Rift Escarpment.
With a sense of Colonialism and original farm house characteristics,
it's certainly worth a stay, even if this is just to sample the food.
The nineteen rooms are simple yet comfortable. There are some great
nature walks to do from the house, as well as visits to the nearby Karatu
Village.
HOLIDAY INN DAR-ES-SALAAM
The ambience and decor of this hotel will meet the approval of any guest
that stays here. It's conveniently located close to the town's centre
and borders the Botanical Gardens and golf course. With around one hundred
and fifty rooms and good food, it's an ideal location for an overnight
stay.
RAS KUTANI DAR ES SALAAM
The beach is the life line of Ras Kutani and life here revolves around
it. The sands are bleached white, with blue seas that glisten in the
sunshine. Then there are shady umbrellas, beach beds and staff who bring
you refreshing drinks when required
bliss! And then on top of
this, there is a variety of water sports for those who are more active.
There are only twelve delightful bandas here, so the feeling is intimate,
service excellent and surroundings idyllic.
SEA CLIFF HOTEL DAR ES SALAAM
Just out of the town centre and overlooking the Indian Ocean, the Sea
Cliff is 22km's from the international airport. The Sea Cliff is one
of the most pleasant places to stay in Dar. It is spacious, airy and
has endless facilities, including a large pool, several restaurants,
a business centre and a gym.
JONGOMERO CAMP RUAHA NATIONAL PARK
This exclusive little safari camp is located under shady acacia trees
on the banks of the Jongomero Sand River, in the south-western sector
of Ruaha. It's ideal for anyone who seeks a true African wilderness
experience without the frills of modern day life. With just eight well-appointed
tents, and a dining tent, it's simple, yet retains the charm of a true
bush camp. Activities here are totally tailored around guest's requirements
and guides are extremely knowledgeable.
MWAGUSI SAFARI CAMP THE RUAHA NATIONAL
PARK
Mwagusi looks out over the dry sand river, where many animals come to
dig for water. This is a camp that promises a special and truly memorable
African wilderness safari, for both the first-timer and the seasoned
safari. The food is excellent and guides are first class, certainly
enthusiastic and will make any game drive and walk worthwhile. With
only eight spacious tents, it's small and personal and due to the local
surroundings, not particularly suited to small children. The camp is
closed for a few months during the rains.
RUAHA RIVER LODGE RUAHA NATIONAL PARK
Overlooking the Ruaha River, the lodge blends very well into its natural
surroundings, enabling visitors to feel apart of the wild. The twenty
five bandas are built from stone and thatch, and provide the perfect
setting to relax between bush excursions. From the verandas, animals
descending from the hills to the river can be seen through out the day.
The lodge combines comfort, an excellent setting, delicious food and
very good guides. Activities are generally by open vehicle though interesting
short walks are also popular.
NKUNGWE TENTED CAMP MAHALE MOUNTAINS NATIONAL
PARK
It is considered to be Tanzania's loveliest National Park. Some say
'Tanzania's answer to the Amazon'. The park lies 120km south of Kigoma
and consists mainly miombo woodlands with narrow strips of riverine
forests. Kigoma Hilltop Hotel has put up a small tented camp on the
edge of the lake and offers a very flexible full board package. This
includes pick-up/drop off from Kigoma Airport/Hilltop Hotel, return
boat transfers to the park and all meals. Sight seeing and local activities
are also included. Drinks are extra. The camp is simple and comfortable
given the terrain, though not luxurious.
KIGOMA HILLTOP HOTEL KIGOMA
Kigoma Hilltop Hotel has a wonderful picturesque setting: on a remote
outcrop overlooking the blue waters of Lake Tanganyika. With around
thirty well equipped cottages, a host of sports and leisure facilities
and good food, it makes an excellent base to explore this interesting
area, including Gombe, Mahale and Livingstone's memorial site.
KINASI LODGE MAFIA ISLAND
Kinasi is a very relaxed, homely sort of lodge offering a high standard
of accommodation, cuisine and personalised service. The rooms are landscaped
into an old coconut and cashew plantation that overlook Chole Bay and
the ocean. The lodge is a perfect setting for sailing, swimming, diving
and snorkelling, with coral reefs, bays, islets, sand bars and beaches
on ones doorstep
SPEKE BAY LODGE LAKE VICTORIA
Located on the south-eastern shore of Lake Victoria, the lodge is around
15kms from the Serengeti, and 125kms north of Mwanza. Embraced by savannah,
the lodge looks like a small village, stretched out along the shores
of the lake. The main buildings and eight bungalows are well built,
painted white and thatched in the traditional style. Food, service and
atmosphere are all excellent. Excursions in boats and on mountain bikes
are offered, so you can truly experience Africa. You can also fish from
the beach for Tilapia, go out in a boat to catch Nile perch, or wander
around on the Lodge's 100 hectares of savannah looking for birds.
