Junior Ranger Family Safari - option A

Departs: Daily

The guides are hand-picked for all of these trips. They are selected for their rich African personalities, their love of children and ability to light the spark of imagination in little ones. The whole family will quickly feel it has adopted a new member. With years of folklore and storytelling and a solid knowledge of the bush, animals and tribes, these guides offer a journey where parents can relax confident that the kids will have a great time. Exploring coffee farms, Masai villages, Ngorongoro Crater and camping in Africa's greatest wilderness, the Serengeti, means no-one goes home without a sense of adventure. Days are tailor-made from dawn to dusk to match children's ages, interests and levels of concentration.

Day 1 Arusha - Lake Eyasi
This morning you'll depart Arusha for Lake Eyasi and Kisima Ngeda. Heading south from Arusha towards Tarangire, you pass through the Masai Steppe filled with many picturesque African villages as well as maize, coffee and banana plantations. At the town of Makuyuni you turn north west passing the village Mto wa Mbu before heading through the escarpments of the Rift Valley towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. En route, you'll view the scenic wheat plains and coffee plantations of the highlands. Eyasi is a wilderness area travelled by few tourists and the journey should take around 5 hours depending on the road conditions and scenic spots en route. It's a scenic journey and the final destination is home to some of Tanzania's last remaining Bushman, probably the most traditional and 'primitive' tribe in Tanzania. En route, you'll be able to stop and perhaps stretch your legs as this is not a national park. After a late lunch and time to relax, there will be a gentle scenic walk around the lake's shoreline to view its abundant bird-life.
Overnight at Kisima Ngeda Tented Camp on a full board basis.

Kisima Ngeda Tented Camp
Kisima Ngeda offers all the romance and comforts of a traditional luxury tented camp. The tents are set in a stunning position on the shore of a soda lake, at the base of the Rift Valley escarpment. Views across the lake, especially those from the huge granite boulder behind the camp at sunset, are superb. It offers an exclusive destination plus awesome scenery and a chance to visit the Hadzabe, one of the last click-speaking hunter gatherer tribes. There is also some great walking to be done here, with possible sightings of striped hyena, bushbuck, reedbuck, hippos, dik dik, African hares, various smaller wild cats and mongoose, plus spectacular birds. If you have never experienced a tented camp then forget what you know and picture something closer to a small luxurious bungalow. The floor is solid underfoot, the en-suite bathroom has hot and cold running water, and is built from stone. It is a tent because the bedroom has a high canvas roof and sides that roll up to let in cool evening air and give views of the surrounding scenery. But there is a real bed, wooden furniture, electric lights and plenty of space. With young enthusiastic hosts, the standards of service are high and food excellent.

Day 2 Lake Eyasi
Today will be spent exploring Lake Eyasi, walking with the Hadzape hunter-gatherers and the Mangati people and gaining a fascinating insight into these two fascinating tribes. This evening will be spent around a camp fire looking at a sky full of stars.
Overnight at Kisima Ngeda Tented Camp on a full board basis.

Day 3 Lake Eyasi - Ngorongoro
This morning you'll continue exploring this scenic area and then depart for the highlands and Ngorongoro Crater after lunch. En route, you will travel via the stunning Olmoti Crater and if feeling energetic, go for a walk to the rim. Reaching your lodge on the edge of the Crater late afternoon, you'll be able to spend the last part of the day on the balcony overlooking the stunning wilderness area within the Crater.
Overnight at Ngorongoro Serena Lodge on a full board basis.

Olmoti Crater
This sunken caldera lies near the village of Nainokanoka. From here a small track leads you via a ranger post and ½ an hour further on, walking through montane forest, you'll reach the rim of the Olmoti Crater. It's a shallow crater that's covered in grass and offers excellent grazing for both the Masai herds of cattle and free-ranging plains game. From the rim of the crater you can also walk to a pretty waterfall where the Munge River departs the crater.

Ngorongoro Serena Lodge
Your accommodation is at the stunning Ngorongoro Serena Lodge. Built of stone and covered with a profusion of flowering plants, the lodge feels as if it's actually part of the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. The walls and terraces were designed around the existing contours of the site, making this beautiful lodge appear to be absorbed into the very earth on which it is built. The result is a unique accommodation with unhindered views of the wealth of animal and bird life that fill the vast crater below.

Day 4 Ngorongoro
A highlight awaits you this morning as you depart by 4x4 to explore what is commonly referred to as the World's largest wildlife zoo. After breakfast, you'll descend through the early morning mists and 2,000 feet into the crater for a game drive. Ngorongoro Crater is the World's largest intact volcanic caldera and is also one of the World's seven natural wonders. Due to its size and diversity, the crater floor is comprised of several distinct habitats, ranging from forest, swamps, lakes and springs, to open grassland and some sandy dunes. It's an awesome wildlife experience. Return to the lodge for a late lunch. The afternoon will be spent visiting a Maasai village or walking with a lodge naturalist.
Overnight at Ngorongoro Serena Lodge on a full board basis.

Day 5 Ngorongoro - Serengeti
After breakfast you depart for the Serengeti by travelling around the Crater rim, stopping off at Olduvai Gorge en route. The Gorge acquired its name from the Sansevieria bush that grows profusely in the area, named Olduvai by the Maasai. The Gorge is about 50km long and in some places around 90m deep and is found between the Crater and the Serengeti. It was first discovered by a German entomologist named Professor Kattwinkel, who instigated an expedition just before the First World War. Later, the exploration was continued by Dr Louis Leakey and his wife, who in 1959 found humanoid remains of Zinjanthropus, later renamed Australapithicus Boisei, an early form of man. You will have time to walk through the simple small museum at the gorge, where you can view copy displays of some of the finds as well as pictures of what life was like for the gorge's earliest inhabitants. From here, continue into the vast Serengeti arriving at your camp in time for lunch. After lunch and time to settle down, your guide will run through all of the fundamental 'do's and don'ts' one has to consider when staying at a tented camp, before you depart on an afternoon game drive. When you return to camp as the sun sets, the fire will be lit and you'll be able to enjoy a nice warm shower before settling down to a relaxing evening taking in the night sounds of the bush.
Overnight at Ranger Safaris private mobile tented camp on a full board basis.

Ranger Safaris Private Tented Camp
To Ranger Safaris, mobile camping is a way of life. We strongly believe that everyone should experience this at least once in their life, for the excitement and tranquillity of sleeping in a large walk-in tent, miles from anywhere. There is nothing to compare to the joys of listening to an uninterrupted cacophony of beetles, crickets and birds or of watching hyena, elephant or wildebeest from the privacy of one's tent. It's all about appreciating nature, its romance and excitement. The camp includes a full complement of staff, from ground crew who build and dismantle the camp, to waiters and chefs, who ensure it is run efficiently, that meals are delicious and drinks always cold. After every safari, guests ask us how, in the middle of the bush, such tasty meals are prepared… well, that's the chef's secret! The team is an essential part of the experience. The camp is always set up in a spectacular location before guests arrive. Be it on the edge of a vlei, forest or river, it will be off the beaten track, ensuring total privacy at all times. The tents are heavy-duty canvas with ample space to walk through and relax. Once you're inside, the tents are bug-proof, waterproof and extremely safe from all wildlife. One great feature of these tents is that all window and door covers can be rolled up to reveal large gauze openings that enhance the views. The beds are solid and extremely comfortable, with a mattress, sheets, blankets and pillows. To the rear of each tent, is an en-suite bathroom, which includes a hot-water shower and a comfortable 'bush' toilet. To the front is a large covered verandah area with table and chairs.

Serengeti
In the local vernacular, Serengeti means 'the endless plains that go up to the sky'. And they do just that. It is therefore easy to understand why this is the most popular and spectacular of all game parks in East Africa. Covering 14,765 sq km, one of the striking features of this park is the series of large granite outcrops that dominate the vast plains, making it very different to the Masai Mara. Life in the park centres on the triangular trek of several million hooves. This movement never stops, as the animals constantly seek out new grazing pastures. Every year, after the south's short November rains, wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, eland, topi and hartebeest gather in their thousands on the Serengeti's southern plains and the Ngorongoro Highlands. Then, around April, they head towards the western corridor of the Serengeti, where many overflow into the Masai Mara around July/August. They remain here until late October/November, when Tanzania's new rains prompt the move south again, towards Lake Ndutu and Lagaja. This yearly phenomenon also affects the lives of hundreds of thousands of other species, who rely on the migratory herds for their survival. These include predators, gazelles, birds and lowly insects, not to mention the grasses and trees that are fertilised by droppings. Another of the highlights here, is the early morning balloon safari.

Day 6 and 7 Serengeti
Morning, afternoon, or full day trips with a picnic lunch.
Overnight at Ranger Safaris private mobile tented camp on a full board basis.

Day 8 Serengeti - Arusha
This morning after a game drive and breakfast, you'll be transferred to the airstrip to connect with the flight back to Arusha. Here you'll be met and transferred for your onward arrangements.

Junior Ranger Safari - Option B

Daily departures

Day 1 Arusha - Gibb's Farm
This morning you'll depart Arusha for the rolling highlands and Gibb's Farm. Arrive at Gibb's Farm in time for a delicious lunch and time to settle in before and afternoon's activity. Please note that the activities at Gibb's are extremely flexible and will depend on how you are all feeling. So, this afternoon, you may wish to relax and take a gentle stroll around the farm and its spectacular vegetable and herb gardens. Later, the place to be is enjoying sunset from the main lawn, which overlooks the rolling coffee plantations, while sipping fine tea and eating delicious cakes.
Overnight at Gibb's Farm on a full board basis.

Gibb's Farm
Surrounded by lush tropical flowers and trees, Gibb's Farm overlooks a coffee plantation. The forest of Ngorongoro Conservation Area starts immediately behind the lodge and terraced gardens afford panoramic views towards the Great Rift Escarpment. Mid-way between Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater, this lovely old colonial farmhouse retains its original character and charm with roaring fires and friendly service. The main facilities consist of a sitting room, dining room and shop in the old farmhouse, whilst accommodation is within 19 twin rooms set among the gardens. The food is delicious simple fare, produced with vegetables from the farm, fresh and cooked with care. Lunch includes a wide selection of savoury pies and salads, buffet style. Dinner is a four course meal served to your table. Home grown coffee or tea with cakes is available mornings and afternoons in the gardens. At Gibb's Farm you can spend time enjoying the prolific birdlife or take a walk up through the forest to the waterfalls and elephant caves, where the elephant and buffalo come to drink.

Day 2 Gibb's Farm
Up early this morning and depart after breakfast on a guided scenic walk to the elephant caves and waterfalls. Depending on the route, the walk can take between 1½ to 3½ hours. After lunch, there will be time to explore the farm further as well as take a visit to the fascinating Iraqw Centre close by. There is also mountain-biking to flex those muscles… Other activities for the kids to get involved in may include: the coffee factory visit, a wood carving course, a school visit, a tour of the farmyard to milk the cows and spend time with the baby pigs, cooking lessons and much more.
Overnight at Gibb's Farm on a full board basis

Day 3 Gibb's Farm - Ngorongoro
After a leisurely breakfast, you'll depart Gibb's for Olmoti Crater and a gentle walk here. With a picnic lunch, guests will be able to enjoy this looking out over hopefully a vast plain of Masai cattle and antelope. From here, the journey continues to Ngorongoro Crater. Reaching your lodge on the edge of the Crater late afternoon, you'll be able to spend the last part of the day on the balcony overlooking the stunning wilderness area within the Crater.
Overnight at Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge on a full board basis.

From the rim of the crater you can also walk to a pretty waterfall where the Munge River departs the crater.

Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge
The lodge is located on Lemala Hill on the uppermost eastern rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, making this the only tourist development on the eastern rim of the crater. The views into the crater floor from here are spectacular and sunsets magnificent. Another major advantage here is that guests can enjoy a safari begins within five minutes of leaving the lodge, as the park gate is very close. The lodge is tastefully decorated, spacious and all the bedrooms are modern, comfortable and equipped with everything one would expect from a hotel of this class. With an altitude of 2,375 metres, the lodge experiences cool and even cold weather, especially during the winter months of June and July when temperatures can get as low as 10' C. However, guests enjoy sunshine during most of the year and must take care when sunbathing by the pool due to the altitude. The food and service here is stylish with meals being a massif collection of delicious international and Tanzanian dishes.

Any of the above itineraries can be taken with an exclusive vehicle. for a group of 4 or more there will normally be no extra charge for the exclusive vehicle. for two clients requiring an exclusive vehicle, there will be a supplementary charge of around 25%. We can offer groups of 5 or more exclusive vehicles at per person rates lower than the standard "seat in vehicle" costs.

If you do have an exclusive vehicle for your safari then the timing and itinerary becomes completely flexible, within logistical constraints. You will be free to change the start and finish days and times, the places visited and the order in which you visit them to suit your individual preferences and interests.

When you are on safari you can ask your driver/guide to look out specifically for the things you want to see, and take as long looking or photographing them as you want, within your overall timetable.

TRANSPORTATION ON SAFARI:
All safaris begin and end in Arusha. Depending on how and where you arrive, you will be collected from and returned to either Mount Meru Hotel (for the Nairobi shuttle bus), Kilimanjaro International Airport, or Arusha local airport. Clients travelling from Nairobi Airport may arrange private transport to and from Arusha.
Set date departures normally use specially converted Nissan safari vehicles with a maximum capacity of 7 passengers; guaranteed window seats and easy access to the roof hatch for game viewing and photography.

Specially adapted Land Rovers or Land Cruisers with a maximum of 5 passengers per vehicle are used on all camping safaris and are available as an option on any other exclusive vehicle safari. On lodge or camping safaris clients may choose to have their own exclusive vehicle. There is generally no charge for this for groups of 4 or more.

All our safaris in Northern Tanzania start and finish in Arusha. Kilimanjaro International Airport is about 40 miles from Arusha and receives daily KLM flights from Europe.

Since the KLM flights continue to Dar-es-Salaam, it is possible to arrange an itinerary with arrival into Kilimanjaro and departure from Dar or visa versa. This is particularly useful for those wishing to include a visit to Zanzibar or the Southern reserves into their schedule.

Arusha is a great deal closer to Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, than it is to Dar-es-Salaam. The number of airlines and frequency of flights into Nairobi is much greater than those into Dar, and the prices more competitive. For these reasons, 80% of safari visitors to Northern Tanzania fly into Nairobi. We arrange shuttle bus transfers or private transportation for clients from Nairobi to Arusha. For UK residents we can book British Airways flights into Nairobi and out of Dar es Salaam- ideal for a Northern Tanzania Safari combined with a Zanzibar extension. Also, we can book flights on Kenya Airways into and out of Nairobi..

There is an inexpensive shuttle bus running twice daily between Nairobi and Arusha. The shuttle bus from Nairobi has one early morning departure (08:00 AM) and one afternoon departure (14:00). The terminals are the Norfolk, Stanley and Hilton Hotels in Nairobi and the Mount Meru Hotel in Arusha. The journey takes at least 3 and 1/2 hours, dependent on road conditions and subject to formalities at the border crossing at Namanga. Clients do have the option of arranging private transportation from Nairobi to Arusha and return at a supplementary charge.

NAIROBI TO ARUSHA FLIGHTS
There is a daily flight available from Nairobi airport to Kilimanjaro airport.
