Relaxed Couples

You don’t have to miss out if you just want to take it easy; for a long weekend, a week, a fortnight or longer. Not every area in the region lends itself to this and, within a destination, some accommodation is worth a longer visit than others. This is a taster of the best spots to plump yourself down, relax and unwind.

Beach
For Northern Hemisphere dwellers, the notion of the ubiquitous ‘week on the beach’ is deeply embedded in our psyche. A holiday isn’t a proper holiday unless we have bleached our hair with salt, wind and sun and covered at least one paperback with sand.

The good news is that there are some terrific unspoilt beaches in Southern and East Africa. The bad news is that they are not all uniformly wonderful all year round; monsoons affect East Africa and most of the coast of Southern Africa is cold except in summer. So, your choice should be influenced by when you can get away.

December to February - All of the South and East African coastline and the Indian Ocean Islands are hottest and sunniest at this time, but book early, especially if travelling out or back between mid December and mid January. In the Western Cape, there is little chance of rain but there is a greater probability of rainstorms on the East coast and Mauritius and Reunion, peaking in February.

March to May - East Africa has a wet season in April and May, so KwaZulu Natal in South Africa, the Mozambique Islands, Mauritius and The Seychelles are most appealing.

June to September - Very pleasant temperatures on the coast of East Africa, the Indian Ocean Islands and the Mozambique Islands.

October to November - Temperatures warming up everywhere. Swimming off the Southern Coast starts being attractive again in November, much earlier in KwaZulu Natal. Good weather in East Africa and the Islands.

Ocean-front hotels in South Africa are surprisingly uncommon; check out our top five:
The Bay, Cape Town, South Africa
The Plettenberg, Garden Route, South Africa
Lodge on the Bay, Garden Route, South Africa
The Boathouse, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa
The Radisson, Cape Town, South Africa

Want a beach resort with more? These three all have superb golf courses:
Zimbali, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa
Lemuria, Seychelles
Belle Mare Plage, Mauritius

We’ve found the best intimate island retreats for laid-back ambience:
Mnemba Island, off Zanzibar, Tanzania
Denis Island, Seychelles
Benguerra Lodge, Mozambiquan Islands
Kipungani, Indian Ocean Beaches, Kenya

But if you want prefer stylish indulgence and state-of-the-art amenities:
The Banyan Tree, The Seychelles
The Oberoi, Mauritius
The Prince Maurice, Mauritius

Lakes, Rivers and Mountains
If your spirit is soothed more by glorious scenery than by burning shores, then you are largely unconstrained by seasonal factors. Lodges in areas which get snow in winter such as the Drakensberg will have roaring log fires, frequently in guest bedrooms as well. And in summer you can bathe in rock pools and mountain streams. These areas have lots to offer.

Chill out on the banks of The Zambezi a few kilometres upstream from Victoria Falls. You can spend your days playing croquet, lazing by a pool or sipping cocktails as you idly watch hippo frolic on the opposite bank but, if the mood takes you, there is a huge range of other fun on offer nearby.

The Cape Winelands are a tranquil base for a visit to the Cape. Stay on a wine estate for glorious mountain views or in a village or town, so that you can sample different restaurants on foot. Cape Town is less than an hour’s drive if bright lights beckon.

The Cedarberg Mountains, the Drakensberg and the Drakensberg Escarpment are all good for keen walkers. Some hotels and country lodges have risen to the challenge of providing cuisine so delicious that you’ll romp miles just to be able to fit in all the courses!

Romantic Honeymoon Options

These are the places that make you gasp ‘pinch me, I must be dreaming’ to your beloved, the ones where you don’t care that the weather has taken a turn for the worse and you have mislaid your alarm clock. This is a personal and subjective matter so talk to us about what might capture your imagination.

Kurland, Garden Route, South Africa
Islands of Siankaba, Victoria Falls, Zambia
Makakatana Bay Lodge, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa
Singita Game Lodge, Mpumalanga, South Africa
Tsala Treetops, Garden Route, South Africa

Mismatched Pairs

The solution for those times when your needs and expectations are poles apart! You need a holiday with enough variety to keep both of you delighted. This might mean a little give and take, so that your desire for big game fishing is assuaged before or after your partner gets to indulge their passion for shopping and museums or it might mean that we find one place that has a wide variety of appeal.

Some combinations work really well. These are generally well-trodden routes linked with trains and by air. An example would be Zambia, Sun City and Cape Town. This gives you golf and bit of glitz and nightlife at Sun City, stunning natural scenery and watery adventure sports at Victoria Falls and the cosmopolitan buzz and charm of Cape Town.

Other apparent solutions to different needs are inherently problematic. If one of you likes desert and the other likes cool forest glades, you cannot necessarily just follow Sossusvlei in Namibia with a few days in Uganda. You’d pay handsomely for the fact that no one airline links and serves both countries and you’d suffer endless stopovers at airports as you travelled between one country and the other. We know what works and what doesn’t, so please do just tell us your ‘wish list’ and we can probably suggest a workable solution.

One answer for divergent pairs of travellers lies in choosing a resort or lodge that (accidentally or by design) meets quite divergent needs.

For top class golf and top class spa facilities, check out The Fancourt or The Western Cape Hotel
For horseriding, botany, beach and whale-watching, consider Grootbos Nature Reserve
For ‘serious hiking’ and equally serious pampering, look no further than Bushmanskloof Wilderness Reserve

Therapeutic breaks

Of course, all holidays are therapeutic! But there are some terrific new hybrid combinations of state of the art health spa facilities with the old-fashioned appeal of a great hotel with superb food and wine in a stunning location. Are these good for couples? Yes! Chiefly because these are all establishments in interesting and appealing locations which are worth a visit anyway.
Western Cape Hotel and Spa, Hermanus and the Overberg, South Africa
The Coach House, Tzaneen, South Africa
Mount Grace, Magaliesburg near Johannesburg, South Africa
The Fancourt, Garden Route, South Africa
Lake Pleasant, Garden Route, South Africa

Botswana, Victoria Falls and Mauritius
13 night/14 day safari and beach honeymoon ex Johannesburg

This honeymoon or romantic holiday combines the mesmerising beauty of the Okavango Delta with the sheer majesty of the Victoria Falls and then ends with 6 nights of relaxation on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius. A couple of nights in the Chobe National Park either at the Chobe River or in the Savute Channel can be added easily.

Day 1 : Fly to Okavango Delta, 2 nights Nxabega Safari Camp or similar, Fully Inclusive
On arrival in Maun, you are met and transferred by light aircraft to an Okavango Delta, Africa's largest and most beautiful oasis - an isolated, lush green paradise with some of the richest wildlife in the world. The maze of waterways, lagoons, vast grassy plains and palm-fringed and wooded islands is home to crocodile, hippo, elephant, lion, leopard, hyena, giraffe, wild dog, rare antelope and around 400 bird species. At your permanent water camp, game viewing is predominantly by motorboat, as well as game walks with an experienced and armed guide on the delta?s islands. The evocative mokoro trips are in shallower waters, water levels permitting. Stay for 2 nights at Nxabega Safari Camp or similar.

Day 2 : On safari at Nxabega
Nxabega Safari Lodge has been beautifully hand crafted and designed so that its open plan dining room, lounge, wildlife library, and expansive sundecks all offer unobstructed views over the endless floodplains of the Delta. Situated under dense stands of African Ebony and Strangler Fig Trees Nxabega accommodates 18 guests in East African style safari tents on raised platforms with private sundecks. Other facilities include a raised game-viewing platform and plunge pool. Guests have a choice of daily activities, meandering along the floodplains and channels by mokoro or tracking big game on foot or by open 4x4-safari vehicle.

Day 3 : Transfer to 2 nights, Sandibe Safari Lodge or similar, Fully Inclusive
Today you are transferred by air to a more land-based camp. The Moremi Wildlife Reserve is protected tribal land, which forms the eastern boundary of the Okavango Delta. The largest island in the delta, Chief's Island, is located within the Moremi and is a wildlife haven. The Moremi is known for its predators, both of the mammal and feathered variety.

Day 4 : On safari at Sandibe
Sandibe, just south of Chief's Island, is in one of the most beautiful regions of the Delta, close to Moremi, with its game-rich grassy plains. Sandibe is situated in ancient riverine forest shade, overlooking the papyrus-lined Santandibe River. The eight African-inspired and secluded cottages are light and airy, with their own private elevated viewing deck, fans, en-suite dressing room and bathroom and open air shower. Activities include daily game drives, bush walks, river cruises, mokoro excursions, fishing, bird watching and star gazing (seasonal water area). For relaxation, you can choose between a hammock swaying from the trees or a shaded plunge pool.

Day 5 : Transfer to Victoria Falls, 2 nights Royal Livingstone, Bed & Breakfast
Light safari flight to Kasane and then road transfer to Royal Livingstone Hotel. The Victoria Falls are a sight not to be missed - a dramatic scenic contrast from the reserves. For many it would be inconceivable to visit Africa without experiencing the vast curtain of surging water that plunges into the Zambezi Gorge below. The Royal Livingstone is an elegant 5 star hotel in an unrivalled setting overlooking the Falls. The 173 rooms, with their hand-carved mahogany furniture, have an African feel with eastern overtones. All have a balcony or patio. The hotel has a superb restaurant, large pool, pool bar and small casino. A large wooden deck affords sweeping views, ideal for cocktails at sunset.

Day 6 : Enjoying the Victoria Falls
The day is at leisure for a variety of optional excursions. A host of activities are centred on three separate delights: the Falls, the magnificent Zambezi River and the surrounding Zambezi National Park. The most spectacular views of the Falls are from the Zambian side of the gorge but to gain an overall impression of the Falls, the helicopter 'Flight of Angels' is essential. A microlight ride and bungee jumping are available for the truly daring.

The Zambezi River has two characters - the wide gentle river above the Falls is the perfect place for languorous sunset boat cruises or gentle canoeing, whilst below the Falls, the more adventurous can enjoy serious white-water rafting or jet-boating.

Day 7 : Return to Johannesburg, 1 night Intercontinental Hotel, Bed & Breakfast
After a morning at leisure you are transferred to Livingstone Airport for your flight to Johannesburg. (Note: Flight is not included in tour price). You stay overnight at the five star Intercontinental Airport hotel which is conveniently positioned a few metres walk from Domestic Arrivals. Each of the 138 rooms is decorated in luxurious African style with beige and brown earthy tones and of course delightful views of the airport car park! Each room is soundproofed with full black out curtains. The marbled bathroom is very attractive with bath, double shower and separate toilet room. Facilities include a rooftop health and fitness centre - aromatherapy massage by appointment and an indoor heated swimming pool.

Day 8 : 6 nights, Belle Mare Plage, East Coast, Mauritius, Bed & Breakfast
Fly to Mauritius (Note: flight NOT included in the tour price) and transfer to Belle Mare Plage. Enjoy 6 nights on the tropical island of Mauritius with its coral-fringed coastline of white beaches and pretty bays. The coral reef which circles the whole island offers great snorkelling and diving. As well as the reefs, if you are an experienced diver, there are numerous shipwrecks to explore with a guide.

The Belle Mare Plage is set in lush tropical gardens along a magnificent coral protected beach. Each en-suite room is air-conditioned and opens onto a balcony that faces the gardens and the sea.

Day 9 : Relaxing at the Belle Mare Plage
The hotel has two restaurants, two bars and restaurant and bar at the nearby golf club. The leisure facilities include two swimming pools, kids club (4-12 yrs), jacuzzi, four tennis courts, a squash court, a gym with sauna, windsurfing, kayaking, sailing, dive centre, snorkelling and water-skiing. The hotel can also arrange sightseeing expeditions to offshore islands, to the mountainous interior and to the towns.

However, it is perhaps for golf that it is best known - two 18 hole champion courses are laid out in tropical splendour close to the hotel. The clubhouse includes a pro shop, golf clinic, restaurant and bar.

Day 14 : Return to Airport
This morning you are transferred back to the airport in time for your onward arrangements.

Coastal Maputaland and its marine reserve stretches 200km from Lake St Lucia in the south to Kosi Bay near the Mozambican border. The Kosi Forest coastal reserve is an unspoilt wilderness region of pristine golden beaches backed by forested dunes and captivating freshwater lakes. This truly is a magical area, untouched by large-scale tourism development.

Kosi Forest Lodge has a very appealing setting, amid the mangroves, swamp figs and ferns of the Kosi lake system. This bush lodge offers eight luxury tents with the most romantic bathrooms, each with a sunken open-air bath for star-gazing.

Day 4 : Activities at Kosi Forest Lodge
The lodge practices sustainable tourism with significant local community involvement. Their activities mostly revolve around the ocean and the lakeland system, split between enjoying guided canoeing on the tranquil lakes, nature walks in the ancient raffia forest with iLala palm wine-tasting, and beach activities such as snorkelling for tropical fish, swimming and examining the ancient Tonga fish traps at the magnificent Kosi river mouth. Turtle tracking is a highlight for summer visitors with evening excursions in the summer to view the rare giant leatherback turtles as they lay and hatch their eggs (Oct to Feb ? small extra charge for this excursion).

Day 6 : 2 nights, Phinda Forest Lodge, Phinda Game Reserve, Fully Inclusive
Today you are transferred to Phinda Game Reserve which lies between the rich game-viewing terrain of the Umfolozi-Hluhluwe National Park and the lovely St Lucia wetlands area.

The accommodation and facilities of Forest Lodge are superb, the buildings being constructed around the existing torchwood trees. The sliding glass walls suites are raised on stilts above the forest floor and give wonderfully uninterrupted views of the surrounding habitat. Each spacious chalet has open glass walls looking out to the sand forest and has a subtle minimalist feel to it with a modern bathroom with separate bath and shower. There is also a wide variety of activities on offer; game walks, canoeing, boats trips, scuba diving and beach trips.

Day 7 : On safari at Phinda
Phinda offers an intimate and informative experience.Game drives in open-vehicle game drives with an experienced ranger and tracker gives you a deeper understanding of the wildlife and the natural cycles of the bush. Drives are in the early morning and late afternoon when game is most likely to be active. The evening meal is often enjoyed in a ?boma? or even in the bush around an open fire, which many guests feel is a particularly evocative treat. After an early morning game drive and breakfast you can opt for a guided bush walk with a ranger. This affords guests the ultimate, close-to-the-wild experience, and a chance to focus on the smaller bush inhabitants including birds, insects and butterflies.

Day 8 : 5 nights Ballito Manor, Durban North Coast, Bed & Breakfast
After a last early morning drive you are transferred south to Ballito Manor for your five night stay. The "Dolphin" Coast is an ideal base for swimming, relaxing and simply enjoying the excellent seafood cuisine of KwaZulu Natal.

Ballito Manor is situated in the heart of the Dolphin coast, nestling within the rippling fields of sugar cane with direct access to the golden beaches of the Indian Ocean. It offers a wide variety of entertainment with gardens, an in-house squash court, a health and well-being centre and a half-size Olympic pool. Indoor facilities include a billard room and library.

Day 9 : Relaxing by the Indian Ocean
The Dolphin Coast is famous for its bottle-nosed dolphins ? take a boat cruise to view them at close range. A tour of the Natal Shark Centre is also a fascinating diversion. If dry land pursuits are more your scene, the nearby golf courses at Zimbali, Prince?s Grant and Mount Edgecombe rival the best in South Africa.

You can hire a rental car or take one of a number of organised excursions. We recommend a morning tour of the city of Durban including the magnificent botanical gardens and the enticing Indian spice markets, or head to the Valley of 1000 Hills, or the Zulu cultural villages of Shakaland or Dinzulu.
