Day 1- 4 nights Cape Town
On
arrival at Cape Town Airport, you collect your Group I rental car (Toyota
Avanza or similar) and drive to Constantia Uitsig, Cape Town for four
nights. The Constantia Uitsig is a luxurious boutique
hotel set on a working wine farm with three widely acclaimed gourmet restaurants.
There are 16 inviting and elegant garden cottages, including two family
cottages, each with minibar, tea and coffee facilities, underfloor heating
and ceiling fans. The spa, with six treatment rooms, offers a variety
of indulgent treatments. Other facilities include a pool, guest lounge
and bars, horse riding by arrangement, cricket oval, complimentary wine
tasting and spectacular walks in the surrounding vineyards.
The charm of Cape Town is partly explained by Table Mountain,
which breaks up the city into distinct areas, each with its own character
and, indeed, its own weather! The city bowl basks in the dramatic shadow
of the 1000m mountain, with its characteristic "tablecloth"
of mist rolling over the edge. The fashionable Waterfront and City Bowl
areas are ideal for visitors who enjoy city life with plenty of restaurants,
cafés and clubs within walking distance of your hotel. The southern
suburbs of Newlands and Constantia reflect yet another side of Cape Town,
reminiscent of its gracious colonial past. Majestic oak trees and endless
swathes of roses and blue agapanthus are set against the forested slopes
of Table Mountain.
Cape Town is wonderful for families with many excursions
available from beach visits to a cable car ride up Table Mountain. We
particularly recommend the Oceanarium in the Waterfront, the Sciencecentre
at Canal Walk, a sunset boat cruise from the Waterfront, Kirstenbosch
Gardens and, for older children, enjoying some of the many superb hiking
trails on Table Mountain and at Cape Point. Our detailed itinerary outlines
the nicest beaches for families as well as a range of family-orientated
activities.
Bed & Breakfast. Accommodation: Constantia Uitsig
Day 5 - 2 nights Little Karoo
Today you fly (NOT INCLUDED IN TOUR PRICE) or drive to the Little Karoo
for two nights at La Plume Country House.. The arid,
rugged Little Karoo is reached via the spectacular mountain passes over
the Outeniqua Mountains. You can sample the excellent wines of the area
over lunch at a working ostrich farm or visit the Cango Caves, a labyrinthine
complex of limestone caverns. The intrepid will be captivated by the wild
beauty of the Swartberg Pass to Prince Albert, whilst children will adore
seeing the big cats at the Cango wildlife ranch, learning about ostriches,
and cringing at the crocodile and snake farm.
La Plume is a working ostrich farm with peaceful views
over the Olifants River valley to the Swartberg Mountains. The attention
to detail really sets La Plume apart: pretty cushions on the outdoor furniture
and flowers on your patio table. The attractive Victorian homestead is
decorated in period style and all rooms and suites are furnished with
Cape antiques, as well as air-conditioning, fan, complimentary port, television
and bar fridge. The three-bedroom cottage is ideal for families. Farm
tours and Karoo farm-style dinners are available on request, if you don't
feel like stirring from this tranquil oasis.(4 hours, 450km) Bed &
Breakfast. Accommodation: La Plume
Day 7 - 3 nights Garden Route
Head
over the Outeniqua Pass to the Garden Route where you spend three nights
at the lovely Hunter's Country House close to Plettenberg Bay. The
Garden Route thoroughly deserves its reputation for enchanting beauty.
The "garden" refers not to cultivated gardens, but to its captivating
Elysian charm. This region, between Mossel Bay and the Storms River, offers
a spectacular coastline of dramatic headlands giving way to white sandy
beaches. Behind the sand dunes lie placid lagoons and lakes, with a hinterland
of soaring mountains, covered by indigenous rainforest, magnificent twisting
passes, waterfalls and wooded ravines.
Hunter's is an oasis of tranquillity, a romantic retreat
in beautiful gardens and overlooking the indigenous forest. The original
homestead is full of character and charm, luxuriously furnished with fine
antiques and sumptuous fabrics. Within the beautiful gardens are the thatched
suites. The Orchard, Garden, Premier and Family suites have antiques,
open fireplaces, delightful bathrooms and private patios. The Classic
suites, with private plunge pool, separate lounge-dining room, and indoor-outdoor
showers, are a real treat. The Forest Suite is unashamedly indulgent,
with a separate sitting room, hifi & DVD, dining room and private
plunge pool. Children have their own dedicated games & activity room,
shallow pool, sandpit and organised activities on offer. (2 hours, 140km)

Day 10 - 3 nights Eastern Cape safari
Head
to the Eastern Cape for three nights on a child-friendly safari at Mark's
Camp (in the Lalibela Private Game Reserve). Thousands
of hectares in the Eastern Cape have been returned to natural bushveld
that supports the Big Five as well as abundant plains species and birdlife.
Lalibela comprises three lodges within 7,500ha of Big Five malaria-free
bushveld. One of these, Mark's Camp, is a child-friendly game lodge, with
an extensive children's safari programme, decorated in a relaxed Pan-African
style. Seven chalets include three family chalets. Game drives in open
4x4 vehicles bring you face to face with the game, from mighty elephant,
lion, rhino and buffalo to tiny blue duiker and rock hyrax. African wild
dogs and spotted hyena have also been reintroduced to Lalibela.
The pattern of activities will depend on the age of your
children. Younger children, typically under 6 years, will take part in
the lodge's kids safari programme which will introduce them to the bush
through various activities. They will have a kid's game drive which is
shorter than the standard drive. However they will not be allowed to join
the adult game drive in open vehicles for safety reasons. Contact us for
other options if you wish to all be on safari together.
Children of 6 to 7 years will be able to go on the main
game drive. You generally enjoy a game drive immediately after early morning
tea and coffee, as the animals rise early to hunt in the cool of the day.
The two to three hour drive finishes in time for a late breakfast, which
will be keenly appreciated after your early morning start! A late afternoon
game drive will introduce you to some of the nocturnal animals and their
predators before enjoying at atmospheric dinner back at the homestead.
(3½ hours, 350km)
