Wildlife Walking Safaris Greater Kruger National Park

Experience the African bush and it's wildlife by foot, tracking animals with your armed guide and becoming a part of this spectacular wild world. Scheduled walking safari packages are offered 3 times per week departing from Johannesburg, Pretoria or Nelspruit.

Every walk is a book on it's own, with emphasis on information - wheter more or fewer animals are seen. However, we do realise that you are here to see wildlife, and an open 4x4 safari vehicle is used for viewing and photographic opportunities. Game drives are combined with an afternoon walk and night drive before returning to camp for dinner.

Scheduled walking safari packages are offered 2times per week - every Monday and Friday. A maximum of 8 guests make up a trail, for safety reasons and ease of movement on the walks, to any one of the 4 camps. In coming safaris meet fellow adventurers at a bush pub for lunch and a briefing before departing by open safari vehicles to their respective camps. Each group will stay at two different camps and explore the areas around them.

The walks: An armed, experienced guide accompanies each trail. Average fitness is required for the walks as they can last up to 4 hours. Neutral coloured clothing and comfortable walking shoes are a must.

The areas: We operate in the Klaserie and Timbavati private game reserves in the greater Kruger area ,adjacent to the Kruger National Park, with a few off our camps in each of these areas.

The bush camps: The camps are small, intimate and open to the environment. Accomodation consists of 2-person walk-in tents with beds and linen - ablution facilities are separate. Dining/kitchen areas are serviced by a chef who provides you with 3 wholesome meals a day, brunch, lunch and dinner. Tea/coffee and cereals are provided before the morning walks. A limited range of cold drinks and beverages are available.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1 - You will be collected from your hotel in Johannesburg, Pretoria or Nelspruit at first light and transferred to the reserve gate. The journey takes approximately 5 hours with stops along the way. You will meet you ranger in a lovely bush pub at the edge of the reserve, where you will have lunch together. After lunch we transfer you in one of our open safari vehicles to one of our bush camps in Klaserie or Timbevati Private Nature Reserve. The afternoon brings a introductory game walk/drive, returning to camp by late evening.

Day 2 - After a morning walk and hearty breakfast we leave for one of the other camps. After settling in, it's siesta time, followed by a light lunch. In the afternoon we set out again to explore different areas and find new species. After sun-downers you will drive back to camp using a spot light to spot some of the nocturnal animals. Dinner is served round the fire and then it's off to bed to listen to the sounds of the night from your tent.

Day 3 - We set off at first light after a snack breakfast. We may walk directly from the camp or use the vehicle to get further out. Your ranger will decipher the tracks and signs left by the passing animals. The thrill of walking, tracking and getting close to the creatures of the bush is an unforgettable experience. A big breakfast is prepared back at camp and then there is time to unwind and siesta or spot some birds around the camp. The afternoon activity is a walk/drive combination, followed by sundowners at a beautiful spot in the Reserve and a night drive back to camp. Here, your supper and a campfire will be waiting for you.

Day 4 - We set out on foot for our last morning walk. By now you will find you can recognise most of the spoor and scats and can interpret most of the activities that went on the night before. Then it's back to camp for breakfast before packing up. Slowly, we make our way back to the reserve gate and then transfer back to the city.
